International Educational Exchange
What began as a plan to bring one Cambodian student to the United States grew into a completed educational exchange for ten students in South Korea. This is the journey — from the first connections in Cambodia to the exchange of August 25 – September 2, 2026.

Student Interviews in Cambodia
During a family medical volunteer trip to Cambodia, we met several students who showed strong motivation to learn despite limited educational opportunities, and conducted informal interviews with six potential scholars (age 9–16), learning about their academic goals, personal challenges, and aspirations for the future.

Speech in Front of 80–100 People at Church
After returning home from Cambodia, I delivered a speech at church to an audience of 80–100 people, sharing our medical mission experience and raising awareness about global healthcare inequality.

Established "Brighter Futures" Club
Established the "Brighter Futures" club to support underserved communities, especially Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia, by promoting healthcare access, education, and community service initiatives.

Identifying Potential Scholars
After returning from Cambodia, we stayed in contact with the students and began evaluating their academic motivation, English ability, and commitment to education. We also communicated with the Boulder local school principal and teachers to help identify students who would benefit most from an international educational opportunity.

Building the Exchange Program
We started designing the Brighter Futures Exchange Program, focusing on providing an opportunity for a Cambodian student to experience education in the United States. During this time, we developed the program structure, coordinated with school staff in Cambodia, and began fundraising efforts through our school club to support travel, visa, and living expenses.

3rd Visit & Meeting Candidates Again in Person
We revisited Cambodia and met with the students again to re-evaluate candidates in person with the recommendation of the principal. During this time, we assessed their academic progress, motivation, and readiness for an international exchange experience.

Scholarship Fundraising & Preparing for Program
Our club organized fundraising initiatives to support the scholarship for the exchange student. These efforts aimed to make the program sustainable and ensure that the selected student could participate without financial burden.

Final Student Selection
After careful discussion with the school principal and teachers, Laekhena was selected as the first Brighter Futures Exchange Student based on her academic dedication, leadership potential, and commitment to improving her community.

Passport Approval
Laekhena successfully received her first passport, marking an important milestone in the exchange preparation process and bringing her one step closer to traveling to the United States.

Visa Interview
Completed the U.S. visa interview process for the original student exchange plan. By late May 2026, the visa application was denied, making the original U.S. exchange no longer feasible.
South Korea Selection & Visa Preparation
Selected 10 Cambodian students for the South Korea exchange program and completed visa registration and travel documentation. All student visas were approved, allowing the exchange plan to move forward.
South Korea Exchange
Ten Cambodian students traveled to South Korea for an educational exchange program, participating in cross-cultural learning, group activities, and new educational experiences.
